Be on the Lookout for any Problems
Even the best-maintained HVAC will break down periodically, but there are some warning signs that you can be on the lookout for to avoid an expensive repair.
- Larger than expected energy bills.
- Reduced airflow.
- Poor air quality.
- Strange smells coming from the HVAC.
- Strange noises coming from the HVAC.
What Causes These Problems?
The HVAC is basically in two parts, one part inside your home and the other outside. Inside your home are the evaporator coil, furnace, thermostats, compressor, and vents to carry the hot or cold airflow. Outside are the condenser and cooling fins. Coolant lines carry the coolant around the system. There are many working parts, and all potentially could go wrong.
Problems with the Evaporator Coil
The liquid coolant in the evaporator coil absorbs the excess heat from any warm air blown over it. It cools the warm air which is blown back into the room. Without enough warm air blowing over it, the coil will start to have frost and ice form on it and may even freeze. The coil needs regular cleaning and the fans blowing the warm air over it will also need checking.
The HVAC needs an optimum level of coolant in it. A leak would reduce the level of coolant and hence the amount of cooling effect produced by the HVAC. These coolant levels need to be checked as part of a heating and AC service from Metro. Also, part of a heating and AC service is the replacement of dirty air filters. Cleaner filters allow more warm air to flow over the evaporator coil and improve the quality of clean air in your home.
Condenser and Cooling Fins Are Dirty
The liquid coolant in the evaporator coil will now change into a hot gas after it absorbs the heat from the warm air. This gas is pumped around the HVAC and through the condenser. The condenser and cooling fins radiate heat to the outside air and the hot gas changes back to a cold liquid, continuing its journey back to the evaporator coil.
Like the coil, the condenser and cooling fins need a constant supply of outside air to be blown over them. Any dirt, moss, or weeds growing on the condenser and fins, will need to be cleaned off or the condenser will not work as efficiently and may even overheat.
Faulty Fans
A faulty fan can be the source of many strange noises from the HVAC. Loud screeching sounds could mean a worn-out fan belt or bearings in the motor. A faulty fan will reduce airflow over the evaporator coil, condenser, and cooling fins and reduce the HVAC’s efficiency.
Thermostat Problems
A poorly calibrated or positioned thermostat will increase your energy bills. If placed in direct sunlight or near an open window it will cause the HVAC to misread the temperature and make the temperature of your room higher or lower than it needs to be.
Open Windows and Doors
Open windows and doors will create different temperature zones in your home, when they are closed air will circulate more evenly across the rooms, reducing your energy bills.
Leaking Air Ducts
It has been calculated that up to 30 percent of your HVAC’s energy output is wasted when hot or cool air escapes through gaps in damaged air ducts. This adds up to a lot of money over the years. It may be a good idea to have your air duct inspected and cleaned when you have a heating and AC service.
Strange Smells Coming from the Unit
During a heating and AC service, one of Metro Plumbing’s technicians will check for any loose electrical connections and any signs of damage. Any loose connection may cause a short and explain any burning smell.
Problems with the Furnace
The furnace is the largest element in your HVAC system and if gas-powered requires fresh air from the outside to enable combustion and expel any exhaust gases. The air vents to the outside need to be checked regularly to ensure they are not blocked. A furnace also needs a filter to remove pollutants that need regular changing.
