Do you have heating and AC in your home? If you do have heating and AC, then great. That means that you’re going to have no problem cooling things down when the weather gets a little bit warmer than is comfortable. But what about if you don’t have forced air heating in your home? What do you do if you need to keep things cooler but you don’t have the system that’s going to make it easy? Well, you’re going to want to call a professional but in the meantime, there are some things you can do to make your Chattanooga, TN home more comfortable.

Use a Fan

One of the main things that you’re going to want to do is set up a fan to cool you down. But setting up fans in the way that most people do isn’t actually going to make much of a difference. Have you ever put out a fan and you feel great when you’re standing right in front of it but as soon as you move the temperature skyrockets? Well, if you don’t have heating and AC and you’re trying to get things cool that’s exactly what you’re going to experience if you don’t know what you’re doing.

If you have windows that are open then you want to put fans in the windows with the blowers on high. You need to keep the window actually facing outward because what this is going to do is pull the hot air out of the room and push it outside, leaving the cooler air behind. If you have a ceiling fan you can set that to blow air in a counterclockwise rotation. This is going to help pull the hot air up and away from the floor (which you’re closer to) and toward the ceiling.

Regular fans are great for setting up a cross breeze so you may want to put them in the doorways as well as the windows. You basically want to make sure that the fan in the door is pointing toward you to blow in the cool air while the fans in the windows are pointing away from you so that they suck any of the heat and warm air out. This balance is going to keep you feeling a whole lot better as well as anyone else who is staying in your home. And it doesn’t require a heating and AC system in order to keep it going.

Block the Sun

The very next thing that you should do is actually block off the windows so that sunlight isn’t getting into the house. When you’re living in Chattanooga, TN this is definitely going to be something to think about because you probably have sunlight streaming in most of the day. If you leave the curtains open and let the sunlight stream through you’re definitely going to be feeling the heat in no time. Blocking off those windows with thick and heavy curtains means that your rooms don’t get that indirect heat.

If you really want to leave your curtains open and still keep things cooler in the house you may want to install solar screens or tint your windows. This will help to keep the hot air and the sunlight out without forcing you to live in the dark. You may also want to look into getting newer windows that have double or triple panes in them to make sure that the hot air from outside isn’t going to find its way through the glass and into your home.

Cut the Humidity

If you don’t have heating and AC you’re also going to want to make sure that you are setting up dehumidifiers. That’s because, in Chattanooga, TN especially, the humidity is going to be something that you want to control. If you have too much of it you could actually end up with some even worse experiences. So, a dehumidifier will help to pull the moisture out of the air and get it out of the way. This is actually going to make you feel less sticky and a lot cooler.

Stop Using the Heat

If you have appliances running you’re definitely setting yourself up to feel a whole lot warmer and that’s definitely not something that you’re going to want. You want to make sure that if you don’t have heating and AC you also don’t use your stove or your oven or other appliances that release a lot of heat. If you do you’re just going to make yourself even more uncomfortable. Instead, you want to make sure that you’re eating cold foods or that you’re only using your appliances when you absolutely have to.

That doesn’t mean you should stand in front of the fridge or freezer either. You want to keep everything closed up so that you’re keeping the temperature in your house as balanced as possible. Not having heating and AC doesn’t have to be the end of the world for you. You just need to make sure that you’re doing everything that you can to keep things more comfortable while you’re staying in your home. It doesn’t have to be difficult either. Each of these steps is going to help you feel better and they don’t have to cost you a lot of money.

It’s going to be entirely up to you how long you’re without heating and AC in your home and the longer that it’s going to be going on the more you might be willing to pay to do other things to keep yourself cool. Of course, setting up your heating and AC or getting it working again is definitely going to be the best way to go. You’re going to start feeling a whole lot better and you’re going to keep yourself and your house a lot more comfortable. These methods might work, but they’re definitely not going to be the way that you want to go if you can help it. Contact Metro Plumbing, Heating and Air to schedule an appointment today!
